Sure, computers are lots faster and more capable than in the early '80s, but there have been LOTS and LOTS of them made by multiple companies. And new ways to use them have fueled the expansion and innovation. So did demand as businesses realized what having a computer on everyone's desk could do for productivity and efficiency.
Cars OTOH, are basically transportation. Always have been, always will be. They can be fun or boring, practical or not, but they basically get you from Point A to Point B. Most people need one, but it's still just transportation.
The internal combustion engine has been fine as a power source. It has, BTW, gone through thousands of changes since it was invented. EVs and hybrids will do the same. There simply haven't been enough electric and hybrid vehicles produced for either to be a really mature technology.. And the technical challenges surrounding batteries are certainly more significant than those of semi-conductors in computers. And the long term ROI is much further out.
From your statements, it appears you think that added complexity or insufficient development or a product or technology justifies not developing it, or not trusting it until it is fully mature.
So if you had been alive in the late 1800s, when the first cars appeared, would you have distrusted them because they were new and undeveloped, and kept riding your horse? What about other shifts in technology, such as the change from sailing ships to steam engines? From propeller driven planes to jets? From landlines to cell phones? All of these had many issues when new and were always more expensive than the technologies they replaced.
Just because something is new, different and more costly doesn't make it bad.
