You are arguing specific implementation details rather than ideas.
People in the U.S. flocked to small cars when gas became more expensive. You may not like the small car(s) that they chose en masse, but they did choose smaller cars. Likewise you may not like the video system that ultimately took the VCR marketplace, but people absolutely went for the idea of a relatively inexpensive video device that could free them from broadcast schedules and that could bring movies into their homes. Likewise I can guarantee you that if a really superior source of energy is developed people will flock to it, it's an idea that everyone will want, though they may not choose the specific implementation that you would prefer.
Hardly a day goes by without news of a new oil strike in the U.S. or elsewhere and new technologies making new supplies accessible that previously could not be considered. I know what I know from working in the industry, as far as I am concerned it is up to the "we are running out of oil" crowd to convince me otherwise. If you want to argue "we are running out of cheap oil" that is fine, the vast supplies I speak of will not be cheap or easy to develop. However that makes a greater incentive for alternative technologies to be developed, and these may well come from the oil companies themselves which of course are actually energy companies. That is how the marketplace works.
As far as I know the Saab 9-5 was not subsidized by public funds, so you're talking apples and oranges there.
