yes, the Phoenix platform (among other things) was to be available as a through the road hybrid: electric drive on the rear axle. SAAB has had this technology since before 2006 (when it showed the first hybrid convertible). SAAB was also involved in other EV work in conjunction with Volvo, universities, and some other companies (involved in technology, power, etc). Some of the things that came out of that include Volvo Recharge and I think the SAAB EV's based on the 9-3sc were an off-shoot. The Volvo Recharge uses the same technology as the 640hp mini I referred to above.

I think SAAB was going this way anyway + GM repressed it, perhaps due to the work on the Volt... and I wonder if there might be a fair bit of SAAB tech in the Volt? we'll probably never know... but all the manufacturers are adding some element of this to their portfolios. Over time costs will come down + advancements will occur. I do agree that pure EV to release in 2 years sounds dicey... I will say that I don't understand the Asian markets terribly well, so maybe it will be well accepted there?

I would definitely be interested in a decent sized hatch or wagon along the lines of the Recharge though. I have 3 SAABs which will last until then + possibly beyond so (short of a near term collision) I don't really need any more pure ICE vehicles...
