Personal computers underwent an explosion of technological development that was market-driven. If you try to compare a personal computer from the 1970s or early 1980s (I have some here) to today's PCs there is no real comparison -- what we have today practically looks like it came out of a flying saucer next to those old systems. We are talking orders of magnitude increases in speed and capacity. Even a mainframe system of the time costing millions could not match the capacity of a computer sold for a few hundred bucks today at WalMart.

In stark contrast, despite government subsidies and meddling in the marketplace, electric vehicles are only incrementally better than they were in the 1970s.

Yes, if electric cars were to undergo a similar explosion in technology of course they would be useful to the average person and not just a rich person's toy. And if pigs had wings, they could fly.
