Late to the party, but...

I know I am late, but can't resist throwing my thoughts out there.
VW Alltrack. I went from an E46 BMW to an Alltrack, and I've really grown to like it. Less car, in many ways, but more car in other ways. It actually reminds me a lot of my OG 9-3. I even like the DSG transmission once underway (but it could use a program upgrade).
The Alltrack is smaller than your 9-5, so maybe take a look at an Audi like you've mentioned. The think I like about the VW is modern tech conveniences without being overdone. It is still a fairly analog car unlike many newer Audis.
I cross shopped Volvo V60s. The new version wasn't out yet, but I got the impression that A. they were out dated, and B. They are not what they used to be. Cramped back seats and low on cargo room due to the sloped roof.
I can't believe it, but VW/Audi is about the only European brand I am really interested in right now. The technical complexities have just gotten out of control and I think reliability on - primarily - BMW and Mercedes has suffered while their style has veered toward the bling and away from being a serious driver's car.
All this said and my lifestyle demands notwithstanding; were I to go out and lease a new car right now, The BMW 320i with very few options (read manual seats) or the Alfa Giulia would both be at the very tippy top of my list.
