We replaced a Mini Cooper S with a Focus RS, and it has been great. It was over $40k, but used ones are less. It only comes in manual, it is a hatchback, it has AWD, and it has similar power as my 2006 Porsche 911. Some will say the sport seats are a bit aggressive, and the ride is rough. My opinion is that the seats are good, and they are fantastic on a track. The ride is rougher than my SAAB, smooth compared to the old Mini, and not as refined as the Porsche.
For less money, you can also consider the Focus ST. Bit less power, but also manual, hatchback, and fun. I'm told the Fiesta ST really fun. It's smaller and slower than the Focus, but feels even more fun to drive. I imagine the utility of it crosses the Fiesta off the list.
Another car that has had my curiosity is the Chevy SS. It's a V8 Holden brought to the US. It's the definition of a sleeper car, and it can be had in manual gearbox.
Or - look for the unicorn. Caddy CST-V wagon with manual gearbox.
