I don't think anyone said they were not good cars. But they were also built under the influence of GM management and practices, and therefore they could not be said to be a pure distillation of what the Saab management wanted to produce. Information about the GM era details that there was a significant amount of friction between Detroit and Sweden. Compromises were made, which may not have otherwise happened. Of course, making cars profitably was an ongoing struggle and ultimately led to the brand's demise.
