I posted this on the 9-5 list, then realized that it probably should go here where there was a lot of interesting discussion on the new Volvo Drive-E 2.0L engine, which BTW uses a belt to drive the cams.
We are researching a number of alternative cars to replace our beloved Saab 2004 9-5 Aero Wagon, now fully sorted out with 150K miles. I would consider a newer 9-5, but my wife, the principal driver, wants something taller and a little bigger. Our son Andy in Ohio, who has owned 9000s before, will inherit the 9-5, so it will remain in the family.
Being an engineer, now retired, I like to thoroughly compare the candidates. I am not finding any new car better in all respects: performance, handling, comfort, economy, utility, room, looks, panache, and saabnet-like support than the 9-5. The following have been already removed from contention for various reasons:
Acura TSX SportWagon, Audi Allroad, 2014 Volvo XC60, XC70, V60, BMW X1, X3, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, Lexus RX350, Mercedes E Class wagon, GLK 350, and M Class.
The remaining contenders are:
2014 ACURA RDX V6 AWD or FWD
2014 Audi Q5 (Drove the 240HP 3.0TDI diesel V6, nice, but felt heavy & slow)
2014 Mazda CX-5 AWD or FWD
2014 Toyota Venza V6 AWD or FWD
2015 Volvo XC60 FWD with new 2Liter 302HP Drive-E engine with turbo AND supercharger (see link)
Amazingly, Volvo offers a $1K loyalty discount to current Saab owners.
Any comments or observations will be most welcome! This is getting too long, so I will do a separate post on AWD vs. FWD (see 9-5 forum for that).
