thanks for the link on that. The engine has a pretty wide flat torque curve and lots of power. Looks much like the Saab engine curves, but a bit more power and torque.
As you say though, when you reach a certain weight, driving aggressively eats fuel. There's no getting around it. All the tricks used to get good fuel economy only work when you're not really putting much power to pavement (eg highway cruising). Moving all that mass takes energy (hp). Obviously, making the engine itself more efficient helps. That is probably where most of the benefits come from these days (direct injection, vvt, turbos).
Adding an extra gear (depending on the ratios) might make them a bit faster off the line, or cruise a bit lower in rpms or give a few other optimization points. But it sounds like fine tuning. Maybe that is what is needed these days to meet fleet targets. I suppose that helps mpgs a bit if they can always keep the rpms low in city cruising with lots of overlap between gears. I can't imagine doing that with a stick though! The world is run by software...
