From a fuel efficiency standpoint your arguements hold little validity - just look at the new 2.0l Volvo - what gear box are they using ?
Your statement about rpms is correct. As technology advances the industry is seeing more 7 8 and 9 speed gear boxes - primarily so the shifts points are lower to keep engine rpms lower - this pays off in fuel economy and the crop of 2.0l turbo engines typically produce peak torque low in the rpm range (1200 ~ 1500) with dual scroll turbo technology and small rotating mass.
The Saab 9-5 was decent on mpg ratings but not outstanding at 26mpg highway rating - there are a good many similar sized more powerful autos easily beating that today.
Many of the 7 8 and 9 speed gear boxes weigh approx the same as older 4 and 5 speed auto boxes. Yes they are more complex but that is the history of automotive design and why we don't drive model Ts .
Saab technology while effective at the time is now becoming dated and being surpassed - by almost any measure. Engines are smaller lighter and more efficient than the Saab 2.3T which by most measures was long in the tooth.
Automakers continue to find ways to improve performance and fuel efficiency and CVTs and 7 to 9 speed gear auto boxes are a key component of that.
