well my 2004 arc does ok - and sigh not even an aero - as if that really matters much. The whole concept with more gears and CVTs is owing to the fact that if you can operate a gas engine in the narrow rpm range where it is most efficient then you can get better fuel economy. Trust me it works that way, the original auto boxes were 2 speeds - I have one in a Mercury and in a 283 Chevy. Then 3 speeds, 4,5,6,7,8 and 9 .
If you were to fit an 8 speed gear box in the Saab you would see better mpgs .
