We have an 09 9-5 wagon, so I can relate to your decision making process. There isn't much out there that combines all of your attributes into one vehicle as well as the 9-5 wagon. Our other vehicle, mostly for winter driving, is an 08 Porsche Cayenne. I found one of the rare ones with a 6 speed manual transmission. It compares favorably with the 9-5 in handling, comfort, room, and performance. Fuel economy, not so much, but the EPA rating of 16 city/20 highway is accurate. It has all wheel drive and will tow 7,000 pounds. It will also go places that I would never take our 9-5. The newer Cayennes are lighter than ours (no two speed transfer case). You might want to check out a CPO used one. The 6 is adequate, the V8 is fast, and the turbo is amazing. There is also a diesel available.
The new Porsche Macan SUV looks interesting, but it's pretty spendy, even in "base" form.
The Porsche on-line community is great; Rennlist is a good place to start.
A family in our church has a new MX-5, and it's a sharp looking vehicle.
