help me to understand how a six speed transmission and being on a Saab forum relates. My 1999 9-5 had 4 speeds, my 2004 has 5. More speeds are in general better. Your better makers offer them and 8 speeds are becoming the norm in upper level and mid level autos - Chrysler uses them in the new RAM and Durango to get better mpg ratings and good acceleration.
It's all a progression with smaller displacement engines becoming more prevalent - in olden times a v8 could still perform decently with 2 or 3 speeds but wasn't at all fuel efficient. More speeds are needed to get better fuel economy and performance from small displacement engines.
If Saab were still in business they would be offering more than 5 speed auto boxes - and may have in their last days - I'm not sure what the new gen 9-5 came with.
