Here is a link to the turbo I4 used in the Buick Regal with HP/Torque - and I think it can run on regular gas. As far as shift point feel in the better designed 7 and speeds - very smooth in normal operation, harder of course upon hard acceleration - everything is better electronically controlled now .
Yes complex and will be more costly to repair - but in the US the upcoming fleet mpg mandates are going to be hard to hit and automakers are forced to design to meet those specs.
But I'd be a bit wary of Volvos strategy to use a 2.0T to power everything - when you hit a certain weight like an AWD XC60 - I think it's around 4,000 lbs - if you like to drive aggressively that 2.0T may end up eating more gas than a larger displacement mill or if it's more efficient probably not by a whole lot .
