I'd probably have to look in more detail at the new crop of engines' torque curves and how they are geared to understand them better. My suspicion is that all the gears is primarily for smoothness and to allow them to better optimize the gear they are in. Of the ones you've driven, do they need to do a lot of downshifting on the highway etc? do they hunt? Can you even tell when they shift? Half the time I can't in the 9-5 with 5 gears! That's an indication imho that enough is enough (like Adam's 6 speed 9-3)... but with a peaky torque curve, you can definitely feel all 5 gears...
I agree that the 2.3T is not particularly light or efficient by modern standards. Even at the time, 2.3L is fairly high displacement for 4L, mainly to compete with V6's but hard to be as efficient as a 2.0L... some of this stuff where a fraction of many smaller cylinders are turned off when not needed etc is probably in some ways better than having 4 cyl on all the time.
All that said, I think the future for drive trains is in electric motors (and no tranny whatsoever). I've been saying that for a while and it may take more time to materialize, but we are starting to see it. As far as I am concerned, the longer I hold off in the near term, the better!
