Well, some Saab's have probably failed on lots of different oils. And if more enthusiasts are using M1 and going to stage 3 and beyond, then more failures on M1. I bet that many also use after market brake pads, perhaps these cause failures.
As for reduced zinc based additives, perhaps some of the diesel focused oils that are designed for high sustained load will work better at extreme levels of tuning. M1 has a 5W40 diesel oil, suspected of simply being a repackage of the older Truck and SUV which was a repackage of Delvac 1. The Rotella 5W40 synthetic might be an excellent choice for higher loads like this. It is a good and right-priced group III (<- at Wal-Mart) oil that will not have the extended drain interval 'rating' of M1 oils, but folks running this hard, typically have short drain intervals and will not exhaust the additive package in the oil. And diesel engine oils have very robust additive packages compared to oil for gassers. A diesel engine oil will not find the chemical environment of a gas engine to be a challenge.
So failures have been seen from knocking from MAF problems on stock systems. These were probably also using M1.
Until the engine is torn down, its hard to know if its a mechanical overload failure or lubrication failure. If I was a tuner and had a connection to some engine failures, perhaps I would also want to blame the oil. If any bearing shells show any distress higher on one side than the other, that is an indication that a piston has distorted or a rod has a component of bending to one side.
When a stock engine is taken to these power levels, the parts are getting loads that exceed the design objectives. Most parts endure this, but some parts that meet the design intent may be weaker than the others.
