Adam, Steve,
It's considered by experts that the direction stability is much more significant safety factor then anything else. And it's the REAR axle that gives you that stability (or instability, whatever).
You can spend as little as $150 or so to learn this lesson once and for all. Just get yourself some RC car model (FWD is preferred to make you believe that the physics is just the same for all those fwd's and rwd's and awd's) and spend 10-15 minutes on doing 8-lap on concrete or asphalt. This will give you some fun and will get you into basics on RC driving.
After that replace the rear tires with some drift ones (or just use sand-paper to polish the ones you already have) and move to somewhere where you can have about the same 8-lap, but on marble surface. Yep, I'm putting this into extremes since it where it can be learnt the best. Once again: drift tires on the rear axle and RC car doing 8-lap on some marble surface.
Report on your results then.
Good luck,
Zig
P.S.
Finally, you could move the slicks from the rear axle onto the front one and do the same 8-lap on the same marble surface to see whats better and whats worse.
$150 only, the best educational experience ever!
