Tim,
I'm sorry, but you appear to really believe in what you're believing to. And you hardly gonna change your mind - you don't ask questions and answer your own ones.
So far I can only say (in a case O/P reads this thread upto this post) that in this context traction is a force the wheel (actually, the tire) can handle. And its limits depend very much on the tire thread (I mean the pitch and depth and rubber mixture) in most of road conditions. Obviously, if you're on a hot smooth asphalt somewhere in Nevada or Texas, then slicks may be the best choice. If you leave the asphalt for some earth road, then you need pattern with distinctive self-clearing ability. And you need snow tires for snow, studs for ice, rain tires for rain, M/T for mud - each of them gives you the TRACTION in those given conditions.
Nevertheless, the original question was what to do when you have two pairs of tires in different conditions and I (as far as I believe) extensively covered that and proven my point with vivid and visual experiments (ref. vertical stick and RC car) that vehicle stability is more the function of rear axle. And shared my experience on what can happen if you weaken vehicle stability.
Best,
Zig
