Of course you are correct that when off-road in mud or deep snow, tread depth would matter. We are however talking about a OG9-3 in spring season, with 9 months of non-snow weather ahead of us for someone that will wears out his tires quickly, presumably a lot of highway driving. Tread depth has nothing to do with traction on the road surface (in the absence of mud and deep snow). Tread depth only has to do with preventing hydro-planing in the rain, and nothing whatsoever on dry road surface. Tires with less tread depth do not have less traction on the contact surface, quite contrary to your RC experiment.
