I believe the moral of this story is to always have 4 decent tires on your car. When properly rotated, you get a nice even wear all around. However, if you are starting with 4 new tires, it is enevitable that the front tires will wear more. So when you rotate the now more worn tires will always be moved to the back, so that the rear, less worn can be run to a similar worn state.
I realize we are talking extremes with practically new tires vs. totally worn slicks. I think most would agree that worn out tires just don't belong anywhere. But I also know living in Vermont, I need traction up front if I plan on getting anywhere in the snow..... Sadly it hasn't been much of an issue this year.
Maybe it is best to buy tires in 2's, and continually put new ones on the back and move them up front once the previous fronts are done.
