Really, its more of a work-around, but....
I have measured all the things I could think of, and on both sides, and they all match up to a friend's 1990 900s. Meh.
It may be ill-advised, but I went ahead and shimmed the drivers side outer cv-housing, and tightened everything up. The tripod seats into the cup at a very reasonable depth now. There is almost a 1/2 gap at the end of the hub now due to this (inbetween the hub housing and the CV joint housing, and I am asking around here to get a machine ship to make a splined spacer that I can place at the end of the axle to help carry the load from the missing section of axle shaft. The axle nut gets most of it's threads on the shaft and tightens like it should. Road testing this morning shows that my ride is ok. Other things to note, is that with the CV extended out from the hub, that changes steering geometry a bit, which I will be watching/feeling carefully. Good news is that the CV boot does not come into contact with the shock right behind it when steering at lock on either side of the turning radius.
