Personally, I would never buy an SUV, Saab or otherwise. I've ridden in them and driven them, and frankly, I'll take a tight-handling wagon any day. If me, my wife, and 2 kids can't fit into a wagon with all our gear, well, we're just not trying to be efficient about it.
I know my next vehicle will be a non-AWD european sports wagon.
If I ever find myself in the situation where I actually NEED all wheel drive (living out in the boonies on a steep, rocky dirt road), I will buy something utilitarian and truly off-road worthy, which discounts 99% of the SUVs offered today.
I think consumers have been led to believe that big, heavy, and AWD means SAFE. A thorough and complete snow job by the early marketers of SUVs, with everyone else catching up to gobble up the scraps. Whoever thought it up to market glorified trucks as viable commuter transport for the masses should win the Nobel-prize equivalent for marketing.
Saab will make a LOT of money with the 9-7 - I hope they put some of it into vehicle research to make future models better, more efficient (fuel, space, ergonomics). It's a lot to hope for though.
