I always found Saab's "SUV buyer" study interesting, because I never found anywhere that indicated what SUV these previous Saab buyers went off to buy, or why they bought it over a Saab.

There are zillions of varieties of SUVs on the road - dozens of size categories (RAV4s and Trailblazers and Hummers), a couple of architectures (unitbody, body on frame), several drive layouts (FWD, RWD, AWD, 4WD) and hundreds of end-uses (towing, hauling, seating, offroad). What exactly did Saab buyers go off to buy? Is an Outback an SUV? How about a Freelander? Pathfinder? Suburban? What are they going to use them for? It's an important question. Because, honestly, of all the SUVs I see on the road, the majority are not AWD body-on-frame 5-seaters. I see more X5s than Trailblazers on the road by a factor of 2 or 3.

I for one just in fact offed a Saab for an SUV. I didn't buy an RX330 or a Land Rover or an H2. I bought a 1987 3/4 ton 4WD Suburban. Because I wanted seating for 8, massive cargo area, 4WD, and ridiculous towing capacity. All in package that I don't have to wash, or clean, or really even maintain. Did Saab take me into account in their survey? Because if so, they missed their mark by 3 passengers and, oh, $35,000. :D

I dunno... I fully endorse giving Saab more things to sell - a bigger lineup is critical for sure. And being able to tell a would-be 9-5 wagon owner leaning towards an SUV, "Hey, we've got that" is cool. But the questions, in my mind, are:

1. Would a would-be SUV buyer look at Saab in the first place?
2. Is the body-on-frame AWD I6 9-7x in the best-selling SUV segment?
3. Is the Saab brand-name on the front worth the price premium?

Only time will tell. I saw my first 9-2x today, I'll be interested to see how long before a 9-7x is spotted.
