46 state attorneys generals sued GM for duping the public. For years Oldsmobile had marketed and advertized the superior performance of an Oldsmobile produced "Rocket" V-8. In their time, you can make the argument that the Olds V-8s historically may have been superior engines, or at least unique, and many Olds engines were raced. I still remember learning to drive in a 57 Olds 88 with J-2 block and triple duece carburetors. Man, could that thing take off and then just keep going and going -- in a straight line. The beef that was sued over was the false advertising. People thought they were buying Rocket V-8s, but GM was substituting Chevy V-8s without much notice to anyone, except maybe the accounting department. GM claimed there was no performance loss and no harm, but the unhappy buyer looked inside the Olds engine comapartment and found a Chevy engine. Not what people thought they were buying.
