My 2007 9-5 Aero is the first car in 40 years that I've had with automatic. So far, I've only moved it to "D" and let the transmission computer figure out what to do. It always seems to choose an appropriate gear so that my speed is maintained/increased as I choose. When travelling, I use the cruise control quite a bit....my speed appears to remain constant regardless of conditions.

In conclusion, I'd say that automatics have finally arrived. My opinion is that manual transmissions will become an oddity much like manual chokes, spark controls, fuel mixture controls and hand cranks did years ago.
