My eldest daughter learned on my 9K 5-speed and my wife's (at the time) Exploder with an automatic. She still drives my car occasionally when she's home, but her car is a '95 CS auto. She likes driving with a stick and she may get one of her own at some point.
I think it's important for kids to learn how to use one. It gives a different sense of control and better feel for the vehicle. Plus it means they can drive pretty much anything, which can always be useful.
She only had one "light up the tires" incident while learning, but I'm sure she took a lot of miles off my clutch. Worth it, though.
