I still like shifting my own gears, and in a slap-shift car I do every shift by hand. In a manual, like trying to be as smooth as possible going up and down. One of my best friends has always had manuals but just sort of bangs the car from one gear to the other. He's not rough on it, but you know he's shifting. I think shifts should be as precise and "machine-like" as possible and so passengers are unaware of the gear change. Can I do it every time? Nope, but it's fun to always try.
I think to a certain extent auto boxes disconnect people from the act of driving, and that's not necessarily a good thing. But modern automatics are OK if they have some kind of manual mode. Just not my first choice.
