Even the best ones. I had my E46 BMW in for service and got a brand new E90 328i with the 6-speed auto. That was by far the best automatic tranny I have ever tried. It was always in the right gear, downshifting at just the right moment with perfect rev matching -- very, very impressive stuff. Really seemed to shine in every situation. Perfect.
I get back into my 5-speed E46. Oh my god, it feels like heaven. SOoo much better!!! Now this is a REAL car. Not a computer game. I LOVE shifting myself. Even when I am tired, or sick, or stuck in traffic. I LOVE the feel of the clutch, I love double clutching and heel-toeing. I love the feel of the shifter in my hand, the mechanical precision of shift forks sliding along. It is a visceral experience that no automatic can supply. It is a gift and I am eternally greatful that some companies still offer the third pedal for people who really enjoy driving.
And I have absolutely no trouble shifting and eating, drinking, talking on my cell phone, e-mailing on my Blackberry, managing the kids in the back seat and listening to books on tape while stuck in stop and go traffic. On the contrary, I rather enjoy it.
