Back in the mid 80’s the VCR and video rental business was in full swing. I was in middle school around this time, and one of my group of friend’s favorite activities to pass time on Saturday evenings was to ride bikes up to the video rental store, rent a movie, and take is back to one of parents homes and watch it. Being a fan of Richard Pryor, one day we rented the classic “Moving”. In it he plays an engineer named Arlo Pear, who happens to worship his Black Saab 900 Turbo 5-speed. Arlo talks about the great qualities of the Saab while explaining to his daughter why she is not allowed to drive it. In the movie the car ends up in the hands of a schizophrenic character played by a Dana Carvey, and the Saab is turned into mad-max type vehicle and driven fairly hard, raced down the highway, is part of a police chase, the whole nine yards. I grew up in an area where Saabs were extremely rare, and I though the Saab I saw in this movie was a most interesting vehicle. One friend claimed he had an uncle who owned one of these Saab Turbo’s and it was really the coolest and fastest car he ever got to ride in, this impressed me because that kid's father drove a Firebird. When most kids my aged looked forward to buying a used American muscle car once they got a little older, in the back of my mind I decided I would one day own a Saab.
While in college in the early 90s, a classmate of mine owned an older 80 something 900 turbo. I got to borrow it a few times and wow, it was quite a thrilling car to drive, especially when the turbo kicked in. It was then I decided that I really needed to get one of these. By the time I graduated, I ended up working in NYC, and didn’t need a car. I eventually bought one, but decided a used VW was a better bet financially for the occasional weekend driver with a small budget. Then grad school came along, then another job that brought me to New England. By the time I had enough income to upgrade my car, I thought about all my options. I was thinking a new VW, but some little voice in the back of my head said “go look at Saabs”. I paid a visit to a few local Saab dealers, did some test drives, and ended up buying a CPO 9-3 that I have had for the last 10 years. Black, Turbo, 5-speed. I think that little voice was Arlo Pear.
