In spring of 1982 I'd been approved for a year-long sabbatical and been offered a position teaching for a year at the University of Lund. While Lund is a small town and bike friendly, we knew we'd want to see the countryside (especially since I'm of Swedish heritage and my wife of Danish). People in my department said taxes made even used cars very expensive in Sweden, so we (well, mostly me) thought we'd buy a new car in Europe and bring it home. After all, with the discount we could sell it for almost what we paid for it when we brought it home (yeah, right).

I was driving a '75 Vovlo 242 and my wife a '66 Cadillac. We looked at everything we thought might make sense - Vovlo turbos, Renault Fuego turbos, BMWs, Fiats. Finally looked at Saabs (which I'd considered in '75 when I bought the Vovlo, but the 99 seemed less nimble with a poorer gearbox than the 242, and the nearest dealer service to where I lived then was 150 miles away). The sales manager let us take his 900 Turbo out for a spin all alone, and I knew we were buying the Saab after shifting out of 3rd at 90 on I-280. Picked it up in Goteborg in early September and we've had a Saab in the family ever since.

BTW, later on that test drive we got off the interstate and onto some twisties on Alpine Road. I was winding through a corner in second when the engine quit. I was sure I'd blown it up, but it came back quickly. First experience in a car with a rev limiter.
