My first Saab was a '68 96 stroker in 1972. I had a '62 Valiant that was having electrical issues. I spotted the Saab at a low rent car lot and as I recall swapped even up for the Saab. The dealer was exceedingly happy to see the Saab go away. I liked it but could never get it to run right--I tended to put too much oil in for fear of the engine seizing. If it had been a V4 I probably would have kept it for a long time. In '85 I bought a new Jetta but did look at a new '84 base 900 for more money. The dealer had one car in stock--Tampa wasn't a big Saab town. Moved the Boulder and got a job selling Saabs & VWs. I really liked the Saabs but was afraid of the cost to own. In '95 I decided I was done with VW and bought a new Pathfinder. About the time my son, who had always owned VWs like me, went out on his own (he'd always consulted me about cars)and bought an '86 Saab 9000 with 120K on it. I figured it would be a maintenance nightmare, but it wasn't. The more I drove it, the more I liked it. Eventually I got to thinking that I was making a $400 a month payment on the Pathfinder and my son had a much nicer car and no payment. So I sold the Pathfinder after less than a year and bought a red '88 Saab TC. Not long after that I got a '91 9000 CD and it was Saabs for the next 14 years.
