Could it be the cost of insurance that keep people from cheaper leasing contracts? It has to be a lot more expensive to insure a new leased car than something older. But then you have weigh the cost of insurance against the higher maintenance cost of an older car off warranty. There seem to be few options for seniors with limited income. According to a report from The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), 21.8 million seniors get by on Social Security alone. The average monthly Social Security payment is around $2,000 in 2025. After medical insurance and copays and deductibles that doesn’t leave much for living expenses. It seems car ownership is becoming out of reach for both the very young and the old. There seems to be no question though that buying a cheap car is often a recipe for financial problems with no guarantees and often a long list of hidden problems and deferred maintenance.
