You make some good points here. Electric cars can be a good solution for some but not for everyone. And the environmental case for electric cars is complicated. Mining the raw materials for batteries can be polluting and processing them can be even dirtier. That is why we chose to outsource those processes to China. We could do those things in the US properly to protect workers and the environment, but that would come at a higher cost which we are reluctant to pay. Charging an electric car can be less environmentally sound if we are mining coal, burning it and generating huge amounts of coal ash to generate the electricity, which is the case in many parts of the country. It’s been single digits in temperature many morning here recently with high temperatures struggling to reach the 20s. Electric cars lose a lot of range in those temperatures. Some folks here have solar panels that can help offset the charging cost but those panels have been covered with snow for several weeks. And not everyone has parking right next to their house, condo or apartment to plug in their car at night. I think about the advantages of electric cars every time I’m working on exhausts, cooling systems, ignition systems, etc. on my Saabs, but then I remember how much I like driving them and not making new car payments. I know people who have electric cars and just love them, but I’m not there yet. I think we need to study countries like Norway where electric cars dominate and plan for a transition that we can all live with.
