Insurance on a leased car isn't that much more expensive than on a car you're buying. I've had my car 7 years and the insurance has not gone down a lick, if fact it's gone up a little. I just shopped for a better rate and didn't find one.
The other big problem with cars you pay cash for is that you have no coverage on your car. You get in any kind of wreck and you're screwed. Then you have to go out and buy a different car from scratch. Certainly not good if you're on a fix income. I used to do "agreed value" on my Saabs so I'd be covered, but I'm not sure how much sense that makes from a money perspective.
