Hello Paul from Palmyra, PA & thanks for your thoughtful entry here.

Your descriptions are quite accurate.
Being one of those seniors I affirm that it is 100% true about having little to live on.

Car-wise, being lied to & ripped off certainly hurt financially, so;
After that it is only possible to get what is within reach since living in 'the sticks' totally requires AWD & a decently reliable car as long as there are needs for groceries and such.

By way of contrast:
Across the lane here is a neighbor of retirement age who managed to get declared legally blind.
He needs no car as he has meals, foods & supplies delivered & has folks who clean his house & do all his fiscal chores for him.

I do not envy him at all - but his lifestyle clearly illustrates another way to cope with the old age limitations whilst also living quite far from any city.
