Had an incident when me and my wife went to an IHOP for lunch this afternoon. When the bill came and gave the server my VISA card, she asked to see my ID. I refused, my card is signed, and there is no reason for them to ask for ID. She took the bill and card and went to the manager. He then came up to me and ask me for my ID. Again, I refused and told him there was no reason for him to see my ID because the card is signed. He insisted, told me it was "for my protection", but I still refused. He walked away, talked to someone else (another manager maybe) and then ran my card. He came back to me and said in a very stern voice, "This time I will process your card but next time you are in here I will require you to show your ID before you pay your bill!" I signed my bill, he took it, but NEVER CHECKED MY SIGNATURE! The whole time after this he kept his eye on me. About 5 minutes passed and we walked out of the restaurant. He walked out with me to take a smoke break, even to the point of walking over to where we were parked and watched us drive away. Probably just thought he was dealing with another a-hole with a SAAB!

Anyway, my point is, what does everyone else think? Would you just give up you ID to a complete stranger without a fight? If you look online, the VISA merchant agreement basically states "a merchant may ask for ID but cannot make it a condition of acceptance." In other words, with a signed card, they cannot refuse to accept the card.

Funny thing, the waitress came up to me after the fact and said to me she used to work for a credit card company and knows the rules, and agreed with me but was just doing her job!
