Use Bank of America or one of the other financial institutions that puts your picture on the card, which completely alleviates the need to show ID. You won't have to piss off any merchants, and think of time saving of not having to write 14 Saabnet posts!

Realistically, if seeing someone's ID was a major source of identify theft, then anywhere that sold alcohol would have a field day. They process hundreds of transactions a day with ID and credit cards, but I've never heard of a connection between alcohol sales and identity theft. Do you follow the waiter to the credit card machine to ensure you're not skimmed? That would be a far more effective way to deter identity theft than refusing to show your ID (in some countries it's actually common to bring the card reader to your table to ensure privacy).

You're entitled to your opinion on privacy, but like it or not this is a common practice and if you don't want to show your ID, you're better using one of the many alternative solutions like paying cash, debit card card PIN transactions, or a credit card with a photo.
