Believe me, I am well versed in the nature and conditions of merchant agreements, chargebacks, and the ridiculous excuse for "cardholder dispute resolution" the card companies offer. And, from a merchant's perspective, I clearly understand why they would demand to see ID to match the card. As a reasonable human being, I think the exchange of a merchant accepting my credit with the condition I verify my ID is fair, and it's decent of me to oblige him.
What I don't clearly understand is what your opposition to this fairly common practice is... I don't understand what you expect to happen with your name, address and/or driver's license number in the 5-10 seconds another individual has possession of it in comparison to the danger of the same person handling your credit card. All the damage that needs to be done is executed with the swipe of that card - with those numbers, your entire LIFE can be reverse engineered. Your ID is a fiddly detail, essentially useless without an SSN to go with it in terms of future damage potential. I will virtually guarantee you tip your privacy hat more frequently and more fully with a trip to the ATM, your wireless network at home, or driving with the license plates of your car visible. I shudder to think what will happen when you're asked to input your zip code on a gas pump before it will dispense.
I am a strong privacy advocate, but I also understand the need for reasonable business practices. Until some better form of personal identification comes along your DL is the best a merchant has, and begrudging them that rings of a "me at the expense of you" mentality. What you do and how you handle yourself is of course up to you, but that attitude strikes me as less then fair.
