... to abuse the sellers. Many sellers operate on 5-10% profit margins, out of which they have to give almost half (~3%) to credit card companies for barely doing anything. Credit cards have a monopoly and illegaly use it by requiring the sellers to offer the same price, cash or credit. They are big and organized and use their power to push the legislature in their favor.
Who do you think is getting stuck with fraudulent charges? It is the seller beacuse when fraud happens the signature almost always "looks diffent".
By the way, the seller could have exercised their right of detecting that the signature does not look right and refusing the card. I bet you did not have enough cash with you - so the police would have to be called. They did not do it because it would be bad for their reputation - but they could if they really wanted to hurt them.
If you want to do something good in the world - stop using the credit card and start paying cash.
