Thks for posting and its just as important as any other topic on the General BB IMHO. As I posted before, I use cash for the most part but understood your position.
Your responses were quite strong and clothed in conviction as you staunchly defended your rights as a credit card holder; which is why I asked my daughter to read this thread.
We've discussed this very topic for quite some time and as a college student she currently works at a golf course and previously, restaurants. She could never understand the attitude of the conflicting policies merchants exercise nor the inconsistent execution of same and how this ends in her role as the waitress confronting the customer who despite what the majority BB comments indicate, would staunchly refuse her requests for ID. She would complain about the customers, label them "rude" for not showing ID.
The larger lesson I wanted to impart to her is an old one. Just cause things are done a certain way and widely accepted by the masses; doesn't make it lawful, appropriate or even simply right! Which is why the best and well thought out policies, regulations, and political systems at times falter due to the human element and conditioning that affect those policies.
One comment you made about being "selfish and loving it" especially peaked her interest. She quipped that the poster was overreacting and was treating this as if his family were in danger. I wanted her to understand that you may be questioned for simple beliefs and practices and tho seemingly outnumbered with others who disagree and some quite insultingly so, it is important that she be informed, clear and concise about what her rights are. She then understood that the Original Poster was simply doing what should be lawfully done.
She says, "Oh, he was just venting to begin with" and "Way to stick to your guns Morgan" These comments were followed by "Dad, may I use your credit card this weekend..."
