I'm just saying that a merchant might want to try and protect themselves. As others have pointed out, if a merchant is a victim of credit card fraud, they have little hope of recovering their losses. Your transaction eventually went the way it technically should have, with them accepting your card without ID, but it's clear it wasn't without making the manager very nervous.

You seem worried about a merchant taking down your personal information from your ID. Every time I've shown my ID, they've only looked at it briefly; clearly, they were looking at the photo and comparing it to what I look like. If they were to take the ID away and come back with it later, then I would smell a rat. I think you give people too much credit for their ability to memorize personal information off your ID with a brief glance.

The other thing you mentioned is that they didn't compare the signatures. I once was using a traveler's check, and the merchant took issue with my signature being slightly different than what was on the top of the check. I had to show them that there is slightly variability in one's signature, each time you sign, by showing them the signatures on all of my checks. It was somewhat comedic.

Also, I do sign the back of my credit card, but it also says ID required in the same space.
