Its base price is over $38k, and for areas popular for Saabs, AWD option is almost mandatory on a RWD-based car, and likely the only ones in stock at the dealer lots.
I almost bought a 328xi GT. I really liked that I4 turbo and big hatch combo, in concept, just like the Saab 900 and 9000. However, the BMW execution really messed up and made the rear blind spots (D pillar) huge! The specific cars on the dealer lots also did not have rear cameras, so backing up would be a pain in that thing. The X1 was a good deal, especially during the summer clearance; however, the front driver's foot well felt very narrow and uncomfortable (the exact reason why I bought the 9-5 wagon instead of the OG9-3 despite going to the dealership for the latter a decade and half ago).
I really do like both 328 and X1 chasis dynamics. Will likely be shopping a 2 series or 4 series convertible in a few years after the MDX collects some rock chips and there's a need for a new going-out car at that time (or the kid crashes the 9-5 passed down to him by then).
