The lying flat is a "nice to have" more than a "need to have": as long as there is a little margin on the diagonal and there is an ok way to support it without damaging the interior, it may work out fine for the occasional couple sheets of building material on a rainy day. That's actually the best thing about a minivan vs a pickup truck for that purpose: it's pouring rain and you need to transport drywall or something, it might save a wait at the counter for a rental van. It's also a big time saver vs strapping the stuff on the roof!
