I wasn't going to post this, but now I can't resist.
I was up there right below Augusta on 95 last Saturday, and I was enjoying the lack of enforcement the article refers to.
Minding my own, I passed a F150 on the right when he wouldn't move over. Unfortunately it caused the penises inside to become upset and try to prove something. After awhile I was getting sick of being tailgated at 95mph, so I tried going 65, but that didn't work either. My friends stuck a foot from my bumper no matter what speed I chose. Getting a little concerned I decided to dispense with their company.
On a nice uphill with nobody ahead I went from 3000rpm in 3rd to about 5300rpm in fifth. During that time I pegged the speedo for about 20 seconds. (my speedo reads 7% fast, so I was in the 135-145 range. Needless to say I was soon very much without my Ford-driving friends.
The acceleration from 115 and up was really impressive, and the feeling of control was equally reassuring. BUT, this is not something I would recommend, for obvious reasons. Judging from the article, it's surely not something I'll be trying again in that area.
I do love Maine driving though, and Vermont. It feels like home for my Saab, cruising through the snowy hills. -AMG
PS. No passengers and no traffic. All new motor mounts, new poly control arm bushings, swaybar bushings, brake pads and rotors, and good high-performance tires made this feel safe. Previous to the poly bushings, my '93 Aero felt like crap at anything over 100mph. Don't test your car's top speed without the proper equipment!!!!
