I understand what Caarma is saying and it has nothing to do with tailgating at 80mph. When you're in a heavy traffic situation it's often safer and less frustrating to leave just enough space cushion that protects you from being continuously cutoff by people trying to weave in and out of traffic to basically go nowhere. The balance you are trying to find is leaving yourself a safe distance in front of you but at the same time keeping yourself from getting cutoff so you don't lose your space cushion.
I find it hard to believe that I am the only one that knows what Caarma is talking about :-). Especially you folks who commute around Boston everyday.
