I guess the only way to show what I mean is if you ride in the car with me :-) I'm not explaining myself well. Tailgating is a bad term. Perhaps protecting space is better. Nobody who knows me considers me to be an unsafe or an agressive driver and I don't mind people passing me, but if I can prevent them from putting me in an unsafe situation, then I think that's the safer thing to do.
By the way, I have 2 speeding tickets in 17 years of driving and the only accident that has been my fault was a minor bumper touch at 3 mph as the car in front of me stopped suddenly while accelerating away from a right turn on red. I slow down in school zones, parking lots, and neighborhoods where children might be too.
