Chuck, first off, I don't think it's appropriate to attempt to diagnose someone's psychological motives or even driving style, especially in such a personal manor, based on a few comments on an online form. Taking on such an aggressive tone with those you don’t know rather smacks of the pot calling the kettle black, in my view.
While it is not my duty to "crack down" on others driving behavior, I do feel it is a responsibility to drive in a manor that doesn't provoke other into unsafe maneuvers. I would call this driving defensively. This is why I would not drive in the “wrong lane,” because it would cause others to tailgate, form a pack behind me, pass on the right, etc. While doing so might not be illegal, it is discourteous and a safety risk for everyone involved.
It could be argued that allowing too large a space between yourself and the car in front of you (again, while traveling at the same speed) promotes people to pull around you and slide in front of you, resulting in unnecessary and tight lane changes, and a decrease in following distance for everyone. Surely you would agree this is at least slightly unsafe. Now if the same person saw you driving more closely to the person in from of you, they would probably not try to pass on the right and cut it. Now, as was clear in my last post, I am not sure if this decreased following distance has a greater safety benefit by preventing right-lane passing and cutting in than a safety loss by loosing that greater following distance, though I could see someone arguing it. However, you seem very clear in your view. I assume you have evidence other than personal anecdotes from your “many years” of driving to support such strongly held views? Or perhaps you are less familiar with some of the high speed, metropolitan areas that Caarma originally referred too. Indeed, they do require a slightly different set of driving dynamics to safely and efficiently navigate than other driving environments.
I typically find Saab drivers to be very courteous on the road. I’m surprised to find one that is so aggressive and quick to condemn on the internet.
