you guys are talking about safety? there are so many things factor in to "safe driving of safe car" that tailgating is only a minor part of it. crappy tires, bad breaks, inexperienced drivers, drivers on cell phone, drivers who is not paying attention, drivers who are not used to the car they are driving, glare from sun, rain, snow, how fast, etc. list goes on and on.
So who is to say you are being safe or not being safe. One can leave 5 seconds between a car in front of them and themselves, and he/she can be drunk and half asleep on wheel on crappy alignment that drift with bad break that takes forever to come to stop. Is he/she safer than Caarma?
Also there are point made from a "professional driver"? Professional drivers aren't pros due to their skills like professional sports. They are pro and getting paid because that's what they do. (most of times, that's all they can do...) Insurance company will insure you whether you are safe drivers or not. Heck, even a 16 yrs old pizza delivery drivers and paper route drivers are professionals, so point made by "professional drivers" don't mean anything.
also accidents and traffic tickets don't mean too much. If you were driving Montana back in the days, are you a safe driver since there weren't any speed limit and since so little car, your chance of fender bender is slim to none compare to NY drivers where fender bender can happen with both parties not being responsible? Or a minority living in nice neighborhood and gets pulled over and get ticketed while others simply gets verbal warnings? Let's keep accidents and tickets out of this too.
I personally hate people cutting in. I do my best to not let that happen. Safe or not. When I stop people from cutting in front of me, I feel better knowing that people behind me thanked me for not hitting my breaks and made their wait any longer than it's supposed to. We have the right of way. People who are changing lanes don't. So it's their job to find a safe space to change lanes. Not our job to creat that space for them. If they don't know that, than I am happy to teach them that lesson :)
Only exception is when there are "yield to merging traffic" signs. Than you are supposed to let people in. If the federal/state/county/city feels that their roads require these signs, they will put it up. Otherwise, people who are already in the lane that they are driving it has the right of way and they are not obligated to create a space for others.
Caarma, not because it's safe, but please don't let jerks cut you in. People driving behind you are behind you 100% :)
