It is always good to get a second opinion and this engineer friend is very good.
When this first happened I tried to get Saab to give me the load leveling to see if it would help. I offered to pay the difference in the part cost. The dealer rep refused insisting it wouldn't help. I later met the guy and could tell from a short conversation that he wasn't technical enough to be doing the job and so probably shot me down without any basis.
I've asked on other Saab forums and it has been reported that the progressive Eibach/Hirsch springs perform much better under load. The Eibach springs are no longer available. The Hirsch ones are not available here. Cost if about 1000 GBP for the whole suspension.
I think Saab could have used beefier springs, progressive springs, or the load leveler, but the current setup is no good which is all I need to prove. Maybe Saab will cave and agree to fix this issue on all 9-5s.
