Most of the work is done in the linear region with the progressive part used to smooth out rough bumps at whatever frequency they are designed for. Progressive springs are not linear and are actually "softer" than linear springs of the same type wire diameter, etc..) until the load increases then the spring rate increases sharply. I think this is why car manufacturers do not use them.
